Part of the Social Context of the Law Series of discussions open to members of the Inns and the public and designed to enhance an understanding of the law and its social importance through open discussion of the challenging questions the law is asked to address.

The panellists will compare the UK and Australian positions on terror laws. Jonathan Hall KC’s review of released terrorist offenders (managed under MAPPA) led directly to the enactment of Chapter 4 of Part 10 of the Police, Crime, Courts and Sentencing Act 2022 (new powers to manage released terrorist offenders). James Renwick's report on deprivation was considered in the recent decision of the Australian High Court (their Supreme Court) to strike down certain deprivation powers as unconstitutional.

The session will provide insights about the process of legislation from within the national security field - and how it is possible to influence policy-makers, drafters, and Parliamentarians during the course of a Bill, and what statutory review of enacted legislation looks like.

The event will be delivered in person and online. The session will include an opportunity for Q&A and for post-talk networking.
