Students should book either a MORNING or AFTERNOON advocacy session but NOT both.

Morning students will arrive and be divided into small groups to go through an advocacy exercise (prepared ahead of time) with an experienced practitioner. After this session, there will be a short coffee break, and then morning students AND afternoon students will attend a lecture on “Demystifying official publications” delivered by Inner Temple librarians. This session will introduce students to a wide range of official publications.

It is unlikely that students will have had to find these before but as pupils it is very likely that they will need to do so.

Librarians from the Inner Temple Library will explain the different categories of material and how to find them. They will also explain why such publications may be required by barristers. Hard copy and online resources will be considered. The Librarians will explain how to use indexes and other finding tools to locate the materials.

The session will focus on the hard copy holdings of the Inner Temple Library but will mention the wider collections and database provision at Lincolns’ Inn and the other Inn Libraries.

The types of material that will be looked at include:

- Parliamentary debates

- House of Commons and House of Lords papers

- Command papers (within this we will include treaties)

- Royal Commission reports and Law Commission/Law

- Reform Committee/Criminal Law Revision Committee publications

- Government departmental publications and ‘Non-Parliamentary' publications related to the work or policies of government, e.g. codes of practice and Home Office research publications

After the lecture, afternoon students will be divided into small groups to go through an advocacy exercise (prepared ahead of time) with an experienced practitioner
